Balayage, What is it? Why do I need it?

balayage

Balayage is a French word meaning to sweep or to paint.  This highlight technique allows for a sun-kissed natural looking hair color with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines. Balayage works on both dark hair, reds, brunettes, and blondes. It allows you to grow out more naturally without looking like you have to run back to the salon.

Balayage is a very natural look to lightening your hair.  It’s done without foils and typically starts at the crown of your head and moves towards the ends.  The highlights are hand painted in sections by your stylist.  It’s important that your stylist has mastered the technique so that each section is appropriately sized and matched up to the opposite side of the head so it looks right.

Our stylists love doing balayage because it truly allows each stylist to create a unique look for you.  They can be creative in their approach but come up with a look that will grow in and look natural.   You will not need root touch ups between services.

Balayage has taken off in recent years with many celebrities going with the look.  The highlight style originated in France in the 1970’s.  Highlighting became popular in the US in 1980’s but we were using caps!  We didn’t start foiling until the 90’s.   So by the time balayage became popular over here were were well into the 2000’s.  But we finally have it and we’ve mastered it.  It’s an amazing look that will bring lots of brilliance, shine, and contrast.

Balayage is now a common service  but not all results are amazing!  It’s not easy to master the technique.  Each stylist has to well-trained and practiced.  The stylist also needs to have an artistic sense and feel for the hair’s texture.  The most natural-looking results are usually those that look the most random, which calls for a very specific placement strategy.  Alex has been a stylist for the past 15 years and truly mastered the art of balayage.
